How to measure a mattress
When buying a new mattress, an important step that often gets overlooked is measuring the the mattress correctly. A wrong size mattress will be uncomfortable and will keep nagging you every time you go to sleep.
Basics
Remove your old mattress: Its best to remove your old mattress and measure the cot. Your old mattress would have changed size with usage and measuring that would lead to error.
Length, Width and Height: When measuring for a king-size mattress, it’s important to note that most beds have a side beading which prevents the mattress from sliding off. Take the inner measurements inside the beading. In case your bed has no beading, take the measurement end to end. Additionally, it’s a good idea to measure the height from the floor level to help you decide the mattress thickness.
Standard Sizes vs Customized Size
Standard Sizes: Buying a standard size mattress helps get quick delivery and save a bit on the pricing. The Indian beds follow the Imperial system (inches) and the standard lengths are 72 inches (6 feet), 75 inches (6.25 feet) and 78 inches (6.50 feet). The standard width is 36 inches (3 feet), 48 inches (4 feet), 60 inches (5 feet) and 72 inches (6 feet). Please refer the standard size chart below
Customized Size: In case the above standard sizes are not suitable to your needs, we can customize most of our products to your specific size. Non-standard sizes would require longer shipping time. Also we recommend customizing the mattress rather than putting an incorrect standard size mattress.
Deciding Mattress Thickness
As a thumb rule, thicker the mattress, the more comfortable it will be. But do consider the following points when deciding the mattress thickness:
Height from floor: When deciding the mattress thickness do consider the height at which your mattress will be placed. Ideally the total height (including the mattress) from the floor level should not be more than 24 inches. For elders we recommend only 22 inches total height, for ease of getting on and off the bed.
Headboard: Depending on your bed design, try and visualize how much of the headboard will be covered once the mattress is placed. Customers at times buy too thick a mattress, covering the headboard significantly which spoils the aesthetics of the furniture.
Common Mistakes
Furniture Box dimensions: The dimensions mentioned on the furniture box may be referring to the outer dimensions of the bed, check carefully if they mention the inner dimensions which is relevant while buying the mattress. If the dimensions are not mentioned in the packaging, we recommend you wait until the installation is complete so that the inner dimension can be measured correctly.
Wrong Tape: Ensure the tape is held straight and preferably use the engineers steel tape to measure, since they don’t bend rather than the tailoring tape.
Corners: In case your furniture is customized with curved corners / protruding corners / triangular corners, take a template of the corner and order a customized size for the same.
